5 WAYS SELF-ASSESSMENT CAN IMPROVE YOUR PERFORMANCE
Crysti Foote
BFF LACROSSE INSIDER: SELF EVALUATION
Have you taken the time to self reflect?
Self-evaluating can significantly improve your performance and confidence! When it comes to developing athletes, I have learned that it’s important to look at the bigger picture.
Now, more than ever, athletes are plagued with both confidence and mental health issues that can create roadblocks for young athletes. Getting past these, can be more challenging than improving technical aspects of your game.
Self-assessments, will give you the opportunity to reflect deeply on your own game. It will help you take a deep dive into areas that can be improved in order to become the best version of yourself.
WHY IS SELF REFLECTION/ASSESSMENT IMPORTANT TO TAKE YOUR GAME TO THE NEXT LEVEL?
Here are 5 ways self assessment can improve your performance
1- Self assessments help you Build Confidence
SIT DOWN AND TAKE TIME TO EVALUATE YOURSELF AS A WHOLE:
6-Lacrosse IQ- understand the game, vision, implementing strategy not just showing up
By deep diving into these parts of yourself you will learn to build your confidence by focusing on YOU. CONFIDENCE: “It starts with YOU”
Confidence comes from doing the work (outside of practice). Every team in the country has 2 hours to practice… What are you doing with the other 22?
Confidence comes from knowing you have prepared and put in the extra work EACH AND EVERYDAY. When you know to your core, you have done all you can do each and every day, you are then able to mentally overcome any obstacle that may come your way.
DON’T compare yourself to others, or rely on any social approval to boost your confidence. This can lead to fear of failure.
INSTEAD- focus on your own game.
What are your strengths, what can you improve on?
Create a detailed plan to get there! Consistent and focused energy on improving yourself will help build the confidence you need to improve your mental game.
2- STAY CONSISTENT “Repetition builds habits”
Once you have determined your strengths and areas of improvement, you must learn to build positive habits to foster consistency in training and performance.
Here are some examples of how to become consistent:
Create a pre practice/game routine to get prepared.
Think - what do you think about before a game or practice that can help you get prepared?
Music- listen to whatever type of music gets you in the zone
Visualize-create your own personal highlight reel, focus on the details of your performance, get in the right headspace
Take the time to write down the answers to these questions and implement a pre-practice/game routine to get your mind right.
3- BE READY, BE PREPARED
Prepare with purpose.
“Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard”- Kevin Durrant
Preparation in both training and games has the potential to enhance your confidence, control and consistency. Be deliberate, be purposeful, be better!
Where are you going? How will you get there?
What do you want to accomplish?
What milestones do you want to achieve in the next 6-12 months?
Knowledge without ACTION = Zero
Knowledge plus ACTION = Results
4-KNOW YOUR WHY
Discover what motivates you. High performance athletes are driven from within. You can set yourself up for success by knowing and continually remembering what drives you.
Interval vs External Motivation-
Internal Motivation- comes from inside of you, motivated because it’s personally rewarding.
External Motivation- comes from outside of you, motivated to get a reward or avoid punishment
You need internal motivation. It's good to have a balance of both types but internal lasts longer.
Ask yourself-
Why do you play?
What do you love about the game?
What gets you excited to play?
Keep these with you and continue to go back to them and remind yourself daily of why you do what you do.
5- Become COACHABLE
By self reflection we can learn to become more open to learning every single day.
Ask yourself…. “What is your mindset”
Fixed vs. Growth Mindset-
Fixed Mindset- intelligence is static
This leads to a desire to look smart and therefore a tendency to avoid challenges, give up easier, see effort as pointless, ignore feedback, and be threatened by others' success.
Growth Mindset- Intelligence can be developed
This leads to a desire to learn and therefore a tendency to : embrace challenges, persist despite obstacles, see effort as a path to mastery, learn from criticism, be inspired by others success.
The growth mindset lets us believe we can and WILL get better and learn. That we WILL overcome obstacles and love challenges, That we WILL never stop improving.
Not only will self-assessments help eliminate mental roadblocks, they will help you create long and short term motivation, improve confidence, and overall it will allow you to LEAD YOUR JOURNEY!
