BFF Recruiting: September 1st Checklist
“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” ― Benjamin Franklin.
As September 1st quickly approaches, I continue to hear from clients who still have so many questions and no real resources to help them. I decided to put together a BFF Recruiting: September 1st Checklist. This checklist puts into place clear, actionable steps for those looking to make sure they are prepared and organized. I hope to help reduce as much stress as possible and help make sure all the details are taken care of on your end!
To make it as easy as possible, I broke the checklist up into three parts:
To do BEFORE
To do DURING
To do AFTER

“TO DO” BEFORE SEPT 1st
#1-Send emails out to coaches
Number one on the checklist would be to send those emails out to coaches. Check out my blog post on Sept 1st Q & A with tips for what to include in your email.
#2- Practice speaking clearly and confidently
Number two would be practice speaking clearly and confidently on the phone! This may sound silly, but you want to make sure your passion and excitement are portrayed as is to coaches. Take some time to practice speaking clearly and confidently so that you feel prepared to go into the calls. You want to sound confident and able to communicate and articulate exactly what you are thinking. This takes practice!
BFF INSIDER TIP: Ask a friend or family member to do a “mock” phone call with you. It’s difficult talking about yourself! Practicing will make it easier on the day of.
#3- Create a cheat sheet of reminders for yourself
Hopefully, you have taken some time to go over with your parents some of the important factors that may contribute to your final decision. If not, take some time to think about what you want out of your experience as a student-athlete.
Here is a list of some questions to ask yourself
-Does the size of the school matter?
-Do they have your major?
-What conference do they play in? Do they get an automatic bid into the tournament?
-Does the weather matter?
-Does the location/distance from family matter?
Whatever factors are most important to you just write them down as a reminder. Also, write
On your cheat sheet some facts about yourself in case you forget!
Some key reminders can include:
Current GPA
Upcoming SAT dates
Any Past scores
Schedule for the upcoming Fall (dates you might be able to visit)
Major you are looking to study (If you know it.. if not that’s okay just be honest!)
BFF INSIDER TIP:
Once you create that list, have that list in front of you in case coaches ask you questions and you are nervous and freeze. Having a list in front of you with key points can help keep you organized.
